The Theta Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at Virginia Commonwealth University held a program that will impact hundreds of young students in the Richmond community.
Welcome Back by Giving Back was an event lead by current chapter president, Sierra Jones, and current chapter vice-president, Stefani Bonner, in efforts to collect school supplies for students at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School.
The other purpose of this program was to inform VCU students of the resources the university has to offer right there on campus. A few of the guest speakers that attended were Zhina Kamali representing The Well/Student Health Services, Andrea representing the Ram Pantry, and Joseph Patterson representing the University College.
Each representative either prepared a detailed slideshow or a thorough speech making sure that no one left the event with questions or confusion on how to contact each facility in the future. The information was clear, concise, and extremely helpful for the students that were able to attend.

After the guest speakers’ presentations came to an end, the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha had a few “AKAdemic Tips” of their own that they wanted to share with the group. This presentation included study tips, ways to better manage one’s time, and even safety tips that are crucial for students living on an open campus in an urban area. Audience interaction was encouraged and people took more away from these small, yet undoubtedly useful, tips than they expected.
After being suspended since fall of 2010, the Theta Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been on a mission to come back stronger than ever. These ladies are determined to make a difference in their community and they are going to do whatever it takes to be of “Service to ALL mankind.”
At the end of the event Sierra Jones assured everyone that “We don’t take any of this for granted.” These women were truly able to humble themselves for a great cause. They should be very proud of their hard work and the staff here at Women's Sourcebook is excited to see what else these amazing ladies have in store.
