Station 2 and Richmond City Firefighters Fight for a Cure with Unique Craft Beer Event
July 2014

By Elise Patterson
Fans of Richmond craft beer rejoice! Station 2, one of Shockoe Bottom’s favorite go-tos for craft burgers and craft beer, will kick off its month-long anniversary celebrations Friday, August 1st, with an exciting charity event to support Richmond city firefighters in their fight to cure muscular dystrophy. The event will feature a tap take-over from four separate Virginia brewery favorites: Blue Mountain, Devil’s Backbone, Champion, and Wild Wolf. Each brewery will have three of their most popular beers featured on draft, including Blue Mountain’s Full Nelson, Devil’s Backbone’s Vienna Lager, Champion’s Missile IPA, and Wild Wolf’s Blonde Hunny. A portion of all pint sales will be donated to the charity’s cause.
The event is certainly in line with Station 2’s devotion to supporting local culture; the restaurant features burgers made from Lexington-based Buffalo Creek Beef, locally sourced ingredients, and a large range of Virginia (and specifically Richmond based) breweries. Managing partner Jeb White says he’s particularly excited about this event for a number of reasons. Station 2 is no stranger to charity events; since its grand opening three years ago, the restaurant has partnered with several local charities, some of the most memorable of which include Richmond’s Fetch a Cure and local tattoo artist Amy Black’s Pink Ink. “But,” White says, “This event is exciting because it’s the first time we’ve done something side by side with the Richmond Fire Department,” and Station 2 loves to pay homage to its firehouse roots.
The historic building has a personality all its own. Built in 1899, the building housed Richmond’s Engine Company 2 and was RVA’s second city owned firehouse. The firehouse remained in service until 1962 when Engine Company 2 moved into a more modern location.

Now home to delicious craft burgers and a wide selection of craft beers (bottled, canned, and on tap), Station 2 embraces its unique history with a range of antique firehouse memorabilia decorating the walls as well as themed burgers-- the Engine Company 2’s Fire Burger features enough heat for any spicy food lover, while brave patrons can always take a stab at climbing the Station Ladder, a towering three-tiered burger served with a heaping helping of fries, sweet potato tots, and fresh-fried chips.
White mentions that it’s also the first time Station has featured more than two breweries in a tap-takeover. “It’ll be interesting to see if any particular brewery emerges as a favorite,” he laughs.
The event marks the start of Station 2’s anniversary celebrations—the restaurant opened in August of 2011 and quickly became a local favorite. All month long the restaurant will feature Virginia beers exclusively, both in celebration of its birthday, and Virginia Craft Beer Month, and later in August, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Midnight Brewery will each unveil a banana pancake beer for Station’s “Pretend Like It’s The Firkin Weekend Now” event.
On Friday, beers will be tapped at four PM, so whether you’re poised for a night of relaxation after a long work week, or want to stop in for a burger with the family—Richmond City Firefighters will also be present to accept donations from those who are unable to imbibe, or who simply wish to give more—you won’t want to miss this event!
