By Tavia Gilliam

Presented by Altria, Butterflies LIVE! is an exhibit that encourages people of all ages to get up close and personal with different species of butterflies from all around the world. It is currently held at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and it runs daily from now until October 12, 2014 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Butterflies LIVE! is included in Garden admission. For adults, the price of admission is $12, for seniors (55+) the price is $11, children (3-12) get in for $8, and the exhibit is free for Garden Members and children under the age of 3.

Butterflies LIVE! is something that the whole family can enjoy over and over again. Unlike most exhibits, Butterflies LIVE! is constantly changing and adding new things making each visit a unique experience. One of the newest displays at the exhibit is the Butterfly Nursery where native butterfly species will emerge from their chrysalides. There is also a butterfly release ceremony that occurs each morning at 10 a.m. and on Saturdays at 10a.m. and 2 p.m. During the ceremony, newly emerged butterflies are released into the exhibit to join the others.

Though there is plenty to look forward to at the Butterflies Live! show, there are also a few things to keep in mind before arriving to the show. First, butterflies love to travel. This is why it is important not to bring large objects such as backpacks, totes, and purses. Upon arrival, there will be a place to leave certain belongings inside the staffed entry, however, the Garden is not responsible for the items that are left. For the same reason, strollers are also discouraged. There will be a place to park strollers outside of the Conservatory. Wheelchairs, on the other hand, will definitely be permitted.

The best time to visit the exhibit is on sunny days from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. This is when the butterflies are most active. Since Butterflies LIVE is a walk-thru experience, visitors are encouraged to dress comfortably and in accordance with the weather.

There is also butterfly merchandise that is sold in the Garden Shop for those that wish to take home a souvenir. These items include books, jewelry, pillows, home décor, and other distinctive mementos. There is even a butterfly library where visitors can receive helpful information regarding butterflies, including ideas on how to start your own butterfly garden.

At Butterflies LIVE! there is truly something for everyone.
