The 7th Annual Latin Jazz and Music Festival Returns to Byrd Park
July 2014
By Elise Patterson
Fans of Latin music rejoice! The Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival will be returning to Dogwood Dell this year, Saturday, August 16th, from 3pm to 8pm, for it’s seventh consecutive year. One of the only Latin music festivals in Richmond, this year’s line-up boasts an exciting array of musicians, most notably, 2013 Grammy award winner Marlow Rosado, as well as Ismael Rivera, Jr., and Herbie Martinez and Orchestra.
This year’s show, producer Jimmy Castro, of Ritmo Caribe Promotions, says, will also feature a special tribute and dedication to percussionist Kevin Ortiz. Ortiz, who passed away in May, was a beloved musician and member of the Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival Band, and resident of Richmond.

The event will be hosted by founder and radio personality Luis “Sweet Lou” Hidalgo, who started the event seven years ago in conjunction with his Latin jazz radio show. Since its inception seven years ago, the show has grown and attracted a larger audience every year; last year’s festival entertained over 6000 people. While other Latin cultural festivals do exist in the Richmond area, the Latin Jazz and Salsa Festival is one of the only events that focuses solely on live music, a huge draw for any music lover!
