September 2014

More than one million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year, but The American Cancer Society takes pride in being “The Official Sponsor for Birthdays. ™” For the past 100 years, they have provided basic information about cancer, risk factors, early detection, and most importantly, treatment options.

The American Cancer Society doesn’t only offer information; they offer hope. There are currently more than 14 million cancer survivors that are celebrating birthdays this year thanks to their help and support. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) is the largest event in the country that strives to raise breast cancer awareness in an effort to “finish the fight” through the American Cancer Society. The goal of the three- to five-mile walk is to raise awareness about the steps everyone can make to help finally eliminate against breast cancer.

The opportunities to help support this cause can vary from person to person. Opportunities include donating money to help discover new technologies for finding a cure, volunteering at an event, or even signing up to walk.

The most important part of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is community involvement. It would not be possible to celebrate more than 400 birthdays a day without coming together as a unit to fight. Forming an alliance and continuing to make progress against the disease is the only way that this event can be successful.

For many, the reason for supporting this cause is personal, but that doesn’t matter. Breast cancer has affected millions of people both directly and indirectly and the only way to overcome it is by coming together, getting involved, and supporting one another.

More than 300 communities have come together so far to help stop breast cancer. Now it’s time for Richmond and the rest of the Central Virginia area to make a difference. The Making Strides of Richmond walk will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2014. Registration begins at 12:30pm and the walk starts at 1:30pm.

This particular walk will be a 5k (3.1 miles) and it will be held at the Virginia War Memorial at 621 S Belvidere St, Richmond, VA. Anyone who would like donate, walk, or volunteer can sign up here. For any other questions or concerns, contact Corliss Hamilton at RichmondVAStrides@cancer.org.
